How to stay calm during market falls

A closer look at what's behind this week's market falls, how different regions and investments have responded — and how Wealthify Investment Plans are built to navigate uncertainty like this.

Key Takeaways

  • The US midterm result prompted fresh questions about the future of AI investment, triggering a sharp sell-off in technology shares.
  • Asian markets, particularly Japan, took the biggest hit, while UK and European markets proved more resilient — highlighting the value of diversifying investments across regions and asset types.
  • Short-term falls are part of investing, and our Investment Team continues to actively manage Wealthify Plans with longer-term goals in mind.

Markets have had a lot to contend with this week.

On Thursday 5th November, a sharp sell-off in technology stocks alerted investors and busied journalists. Behind the market shifts are concerns about the future of AI, the direction of inflation, and bigger questions about the global economy.

In other words, heavy topics.

When markets move quickly, the twists and turns can feel dizzying. That’s why we've taken a step back to look at what's driving events, what it means for your investments, and – crucially – why perspective matters.

What’s actually going on?

One of the biggest influences on markets this week has been the US midterm elections.

Held halfway through a president's term, midterms can bring significant changes to the political landscape — and give investors plenty to consider, too.

This time, Democrats made significant gains, winning control of both the House of Representatives and Senate, changing the balance of political power in Washington. [1]

Markets initially responded positively, but attention soon turned to what this changing political landscape might mean for AI investment. Worries that increased scrutiny could slow AI-related spending, led many investors to sell tech shares.

This sell-off gave the S&P 500 its biggest one-day fall in over a year, with Asian markets – particularly Japan – bearing the brunt of this hit. However, UK and European markets proved more resilient.

Despite the sharp falls, global shares remain up in 2026 so far — and one difficult day doesn't erase months of progress.

Looking beyond the news

While noisy headlines can make for unsettling reading, remember that much of this selling was concentrated in AI and chip companies, many of which had enjoyed a strong run.

A change in investor sentiment can move markets quickly, but it doesn't necessarily mean the wider, longer-term business and economic outlook has fundamentally changed.

Essentially, it's still too early to know whether this mood change will last.

Why your Plan is built for moments like this

Diversification.

It’s the investing mantra that never rusts, and this is yet another example of why it truly matters.

Wealthify Plans aren’t dependent on one country, industry, or investment type. Our team of experts always have and always will, invest across a broad mix of markets and assets, helping balance your exposure when conditions change.

That includes:

  • Shares across different regions. Wealthify Plans include US technology companies, but also UK and European shares, which were less affected by this week's sell-off.
  • Bonds. These can help balance the ups and downs of shares, as they've traditionally offered some stability during periods of market uncertainty.
  • Infrastructure. Think energy networks, utilities, and transport. These are essential services, often supported by long-term contracts or regulated prices, which can make them steadier than the wider market.
  • Absolute return. Added to our Investment Plans this year, this fund aims to deliver positive returns over time without relying on stock markets rising.

Of course, diversification doesn't prevent losses, but it does help spread the weight and soften the blow.

We understand weeks like this can be unsettling.

When the news feels inescapable, it’s easy to slip into a reactive mindset — which is why reconnecting with the bigger picture can help put things into perspective.

Remember, investing has always involved periods of uncertainty.

A few difficult days or weeks don't define your long-term investment journey, especially when “sentiment” is at the steering wheel.

As always, our Investment Team are looking out for market developments and actively managing your Plan as conditions change — leaving you free to carry on enjoying life.
